Saving the City Of Nineveh

Our first example comes from the book of Jonah.

God called Jonah, who was an Israelite prophet, to go to Nineveh,

Now, Nineveh was a Gentile habitation.

Jonah refused and tried to run away from God Almighty,

however, God punished him severely. What followed is recorded in the third chapter of Jonah:

1Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time:
"Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you." Jonah obeyed the word of the Lord and went to Nineveh Now Nineveh was a very important city —a visit required three days [to go all through it. On the first day, Jonah started into the city. He proclaimed: "Forty more days and Nineveh will be overturned."

Jonah 3:1-4

Jonah's message was important but brief, The response of the Ninevites was remarkable:

When the King heard, he took a very drastic decision.

The proclamation that the king issued was even more remarkable. It goes like this: "By decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let any man or beast, herd or flock, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink."
